Lights...and Lycra...

Postby iZentai » Wed Aug 22, 2012 2:10 pm

It's been a while.
I'm still not 100% sure what I want to do.

....but there's this nagging "thing" that's pretty much been bugging me since uni in 2006.

For years my friends would eventually hear my mention this idea and how great it would be, getting them equally excited about it. Almost expecting me to have made it in a week (stranger things have happened).

But it's a big thing...Even now, talking to MAX/MSP programmers, AV technicians and electronic specialists, they're all saying it's impossible.

Now, initially I would hang up the idea and leave it for dead. But the director of my course (where this idea was born) said it was possible, it was hard as hell, but possible. And for a dissertation, I would have the support of high end tutors (who would probably use part of it for their Masters/PhD programs)

It's possible. It *still* hasn't been done. But one man is on the same wavelength as I am and ahead of me but only by a little:

It's always been a pet peeve of mine when DJing that there's always a *table* in the way. Of course most DJ's are guys and are quite happy behind the table....unless you're Steve Aoki, but I digress :-)

Still...what with all the technological advances in recent years why is there still a table? DJing isn't DJing anymore, it is a performance...visual is taking over to dance with audio, we all know this. But it would appear that DJ's aren't up for prancing around on stage and interacting with their audience all that much...

So yeah...I could go on and on about this but obviously I don't want to start saying stuff then having to renege on it as I really want this to happen and work.

What I WAS wondering is if folks would be interested in it being posted here, or should a sister blog be started for it (and leave the 28days in tact). I'm open to suggestions.

Whilst this is a bit limited, it at least shows other folks are aware of the endless possibilities zentai has (even if they must call it something else):

Unless you're going to do it in Zentai, better start a new blog.

So you want to imbed lights in lycra ....

Not has hard as one thinks .
As a EE first and a costumer second I know It can be done ............. but for how much :)

WARMEX tights are a neat way to let power flow in a spandex garmet look in to them .. LEDs need mA to run ,, this is doable with uber high silver strand content nylon lycra .......... Yea your suit will be 10% silver by vol.

TTL sigs that can run a Micro controller are again low current .

you can bond flex PCBs to materials .

MSP as in the TI MSP430? darn low power Micon ? i have a TI sample kit but I have not had the time to tinker much .

Have a look at these guys if you want some ideas http://www.enlighted.com/, they have done suits and other custom clothing for loads of live shows and such. I first came across them when I was looking at the custom electroluminecent wire suits that Daft Punk wore fore there 2007 concerts.
Ha ha, made you read my signature!

Woo answers :-)

The base suit will be Lycra/zentai yes...so probably a lot of talk about different thicknesses of lycra, what works/what doesn't, neoprene, probably latex impregnated lycra....all ideas currently doing the rounds in my head.

@LB Not quite embedded, but If you think of what storm troopers wear and drill hundreds of holes in that....you're not too far off from my thinking :-). I have a friend in France who's pretty much my LED guru (seriously, I mentioned an idea to him and 2 hours later he had a working prototype of it o_O) so he's said it's doable and he introduced me to someone who can print to kapton once we've figured out the configuration of lights per panel, but the music aspect of it (generating or processing sound) is something he's not 100% about, nor e-textile technology. Thank you for mentioning warmex tights, I've never heard of them before and look ideal! Breakage is obviously the next concern!

It's MAX/MSP. Same creature as PureData but loads more support (including Abelton) and probably a friendlier GUI.

@ZK Awesome!! Definitely on the right lines, but the density of LED's is still a bit too sparse for what I'm doing. I'll certainly ping them an e-mail or two.

Just to give you guys an idea of the size of LED I'm looking at  :

AW Cute SMT LEDs .... :) OK you ought to try the propeller chip from parallax. I have seen some amazing stuff done with it .
heck It can do VGA and NTSC video out !
Small hint .. ya want to do audio I/O then the prop can do MIDI too!

shove some serial data on a ZIgBee wireless link to a 2ed prop as a interface chip and then run MIDI to what ever you choose ..

want to have some real fun ..... thereimin from a 3 Axis accel chip . use X for pitch Y for Vol and Z for tremolo ...
